Frequently Asked Questions … and Answers

Why do I need a resume?

This question can take on a variety of meanings.

  • “Nobody needs a resume anymore. I just use my LinkedIn profile.”
  • “I network my way into a company, so I don’t need a resume until they want one for the file, and then it doesn’t matter if it’s any good.”
  • “I don’t need a resume because I never have to look for a job. Companies find me.”

All of those can be true, but they’re not true for everyone nor for one person at different times during a career.

  • LinkedIn profiles and resumes have different roles. It’s risky to depend on either one to carry the weight of both. Are you ready to stake your job on it?
  • Networking is your No. 1 job search skill. Never underestimate it. However, underestimating the power of a great resume is just as grave an error. I read recently on a colleague’s blog that a client had landed a job he liked with the resume she had written. They were very pleased. A couple of years later, he was called to HR about a corporate posting because his resume had come up in a computer search for a job that suited him even better. Now, that’s a good resume.
  • Being courted by companies is very flattering, right up until the salary negotiations. That’s the time you want a results-oriented, top-of-the-charts resume that shows them exactly why they should pay you the big bucks.

If you are going about your job search in the best way possible, you need a resume to represent you when you can’t be there in person. You’ll leave one after a career exploration interview. You email it to a LinkedIn or Twitter contact or upload it to LinkedIn. They’re also good to give to your references so they can catch up on what you’ve been doing and jot notes about what they will say about you. You may even give them to friends and family who are keeping their ears open for jobs you could apply for.

Why do I need my resume to be so good?

When you go to a job interview, you dress up. You may even buy a new outfit and new shoes. You are being your best you. You will be compared with others who do the same things you do, so something about you will have to rise above the competition. The same is true for your resume. There must be something in it that rises above. To ensure that there is, a certified professional resume writer knows the questions to ask, the format to use, the material to keep or omit, and the style of writing that is most effective. Do you?

What can I expect a resume to do?

Get you an interview.

The future boss of one of our clients held up his resume to the hiring committee and said, “I want this guy.” Usually, it takes more than a great resume to land a job. What you want it to do is attract enough interest for a hiring authority to invite you for an interview.

Why should I hire anyone to write my resume?

Most people brag ineffectively. CEOs are some of the most humble people we know. They are so accustomed to making big decisions that they often don’t think of their accomplishments in the same way a hiring authority does. Blame our culture; we’re not taught to recognize our strengths and talk about the things we do best, so we underplay them. Even other resume writers may not necessarily focus on this very important point. At Workwrite, we do.

I have a great new resume, and I’m posting it on all the job boards, but nothing’s happening. What’s wrong?

The odds are against you, that’s all. Less than 5% of job seekers find jobs by posting their resume on a job board. They don’t get a lot better odds by answering job postings on the Web. The global recession and resulting high unemployment rate have put millions more job seekers out there. The Internet has made applying for jobs incredibly easy. The combination means that employers who post jobs are inundated with applications. Your resume may or may not be read. The result is that some employers don’t post jobs at all. It sounds like a recipe for job hunting disaster unless you know what to do. That’s where Workwrite Job Search Strategies come in.  We teach more effective and proactive ways to conduct a job search or a career change.

How will Workwrite help my job search?

You’ll shorten your search, for one thing, and that’s huge. The length of job searches has doubled and in some cases tripled in the past couple of years of high unemployment and hiring freezes. In the time it takes employment to get back to normal, you can be working instead of emailing resumes.

You’ll feel more in control of your destiny because of our more proactive approach. You’ll make contacts in your industry that can remain valuable long past your first day in your new job. And you’ll retain these new-found skills for the rest of your life, so that if you decide to make that big move, you have your roadmap in front of you.
